002 Care, responsibility and secular dharma

Due to be published towards the end of 2026, the author asks: what does it mean to live a life of meaning and fulfilment in times of rapid change, such as those we are living in? In this Buddhism In A Nutshell title, Carmel Shalev explores questions about leading an ethical life from a secular Buddhist perspective.

She suggests that living ethically day-to-day entails an ongoing inquiry about responding with care and responsibility to conditions of intrinsic uncertainty, asking: ‘What good can I do?’.

The practice of the dharma through study, contemplation and action is a path of personal agency, supported by a community that forms around common values. The purpose of Care, responsibility and secular dharma is to help us awaken to reality, however mundane, rather than transcend it.
